Passive Tense

Grammatical Rule:

The easiest way to understand the passive test is to pretend that you are a politician. Instead of saying that you messed up, you say "Mistakes were made." You don't say "I lost your keys," you say "Your keys were lost."

The key in those two sentences is the verb to be. This is the same as it is in French that uses "être" to form the passive tense. You dont say "J'ai perdu tes clées" you say

  • "Tes clées ont été perdues."
  • Notice that être is conjugated in the same tense as the active verb.
  • Also notice that the past participle is in agreement with the subject.
